Should we be interfering in the Middle East AGAIN ?

Post by papa_umau on Tue 22 Mar 2011, 11:13 am

Now that we see the ratcheting-up of the so-called "no-fly-zone" in Libya and the French working with Britain to take out Ghaddafi's war-mchine and the Americans slinging Tomahawk missiles all over the place, I wonder if this could easily turn out to be another Iraq ?

Remember what happened when we deposed Saddam Hussein in Iraq: we left a power vaccuum which was filled by tribal warlords and we allowed a genocide attempt between the Sunny and the Shiite factions to get under way. Even now we have to deal with Muqtada Al Sadr and his Mahdi army if we want to get oil out of the country.

How are we going to get our hands on Libya's oil if we don't know who will be controlling it after Ghaddafi is gone ?

This begs the question...Should we be interfering in the problems of the Middle East at all ?

    A good question Paps.

I cannot imagine why we see ourselves as the policemen of the world and as the first country to volunteer to fight for the UN policies every time.

Of course it is true that as far as Iraq and Libya are concerned it is oil that is driving this interfering machine.

    So true Zath !

There are a number of states right around the world that are ruled by cruel dictators and yet we only seem to want to interfere in the ones that have oil. Funny that !

Maybe it is time that the United Nations had their own police force so that no single country can be indicted for "interfering" in other country's internal affairs.

The least I would expect from the membership of the UN is that once a motion is passed like this there is a representation sent from every member in the UN.

You might not know it but the UN DOES have it's own police-force.

You will recognise them by their white vehicles and their powder-blue berets.

Sadly, they do not have the remit to make outright war. All they can do is to try to protect the innocents when and where and IF they are deployed.
