    Supermarket "Ping-Pong" rip-off !

Post by papa_umau on Mon 07 Mar 2011, 1:06 pm

I suppose that at first glance that heading sounds somewhat amusing but the term "Ping-Ponging" is a genuine name for a trick that supermarket marketeers are using in order to rip-off their customers.

Many people will probably suspect that this happens but now it has been confirmed by pricing expert Martin Isark that supermarkets are previously adding on the amount that they take off during their "bargain days". This fools the customers into thinking that they are actually getting a good deal when they take up these offers. THEY ARE NOT, in many cases !

This has been raised with The Office of Fair Trading, ( OFT ), and a spokesperson for this watchdog admitted that "this is something we have concerns with !"

I guess that "watch this space" is all I can suggest over this.

I have to admit Paps, that I have not heard of that term before.

I have always thought that this kind of thing was happening but I have not seen it written down like that.

Maybe it is time that we got a grip on the marketing people in the supermarkets so that the customers are no longer taken for a ride with pricing policy.

How to do it, I am not so sure.

I discovered something else about this practice yesterday:

Many retailers - including furniture retailers and supermarkets - publish a little note on such "bargains" saying that at some period previous to the sale the item had been what they call "full price". This does not explain that even if they did have this item at a higher price in previous days weeks or months, HOW LONG it was at that price.

That's probably their way of getting out of that indictment.

Mind you, I think that the OFT are another watchdog that have no real bite. If they did they would get on top of that trick right away.
