    Who's right and who's wrong ?

Post by papa_umau on Sat 06 Nov 2010, 11:27 am

After Germany decided to close down ALL of it's nuclear power-plants a couple of years ago we see the German people taking to the streets to protest about the returning of spent nuclear waste to their Northern German town of Gorleben after it had been "re-processed" in France.

This made me wonder what WE are going to do in the future when we realise that not only are we NOT shutting down nuclear reactors but we are planning to build eleven or twelve NEW ONES.

If we are already having problems - just like Germany and France - with our present nuclear waste what are we going to do with the waste that will come from twelve new nuclear power plants.

As I see it we are sleep-walking towards a problem that will arise just as our children are becoming adults. Do we REALLY need to leave that as a legacy for our kids ?

    See THIS news report.

Yes mate, the Germans are very green in their politics and we could do a lot better if we were to take a leaf from their book.

Blair was the prime minister that pushed for the twelve new nuclear power stations as he was terrified that we would fall down on our pledge to make Britain very low carbon in the future.

As far as pollution is concerned, even if nuclear power stations do not put CO2 into the air they do always finish up with a large radioactive waste-product problem at decomissioning.

    Thanks Papa.

I noticed that yesterday one of the energy big-wigs was threateniing that if we do not get our renewable power projects onstream very quickly a lot of the lights are going to go out.

How that differs with Alex Salmond's statement that in six months to a year's time Scotland alone will be producing enough renewable energy to power the whole of Germany.

Yes Angie, you are dead on there !

The reason for that is that Scotland is not just mucking about with the "idea" of renewable energy; we are getting down to it so that in the years to come, not only will we be self-sufficient in low-carbon energy but we will be able to export extra clean energy to England and on to Europe. This WILL NOT include energy from nuclear power-stations either.

Our parliament has decided that NONE of Blair's nuclear power-plants will be built up here.

    I like that idea !
