Should British prisoners be allowed to vote ?

Post by papa_umau on Tue 02 Nov 2010, 11:44 am

After a lengthy row in Europe over the human rights of the incarcerated in Britain it looks as if the British government are going to cave in and allow all of our serving prisoners the right to vote in any general election of the future.

We in Britain were always of the impression that if a person breaks the law seriously enough to be jailed that he or she automatically forfeited their right to vote. Now it seems that the European Commission of Human Rights feeels that we are contravening these human rights of our incarcerated persons by not allowing them to vote.

HERE is a news report on this subject !

    What do YOU think ?

When one considers that we are not even fully into the European Union and the fact that we still have a veto that we can use any time we want to, this really pisses me off.

Why should Brussels dictate to us how we should run our country ?

Now we are going to see many thousands of cons skewing the results of elections as they put their twisted ideas in via the ballot box.

It has long been considered that when a person breaks the law and is convicted that they give up their right to vote. I can see no reason why this should change.

No, they should not be allowed to vote and we should stand up for our own sovereignty here instead of knuckling under to pressure from Europe.

Where is all this going to end I wonder ? Eventually we are not going to be able to make any laws without first consulting Brussels. How crazy is that then ?

Brussels do not dictate anything on how we should run our country.

The Council of Ministers, which includes our own MEP's in Brussals, are our decision makers.

I am afraid that it IS the majority vote in Brussels that forces certain laws on us that we might not want to take part in if we were independent of Europe.

As we are a members and signatories of the Treaty of Rome and the Treaty of Madrid we, as a result, are forced to accept some laws that contradict laws made in our own parliament.

This decision to give prisoners the vote because of their human rights being contravened is typical of what comes to us from Brussels.

We do have a veto if we care to use it but I don't know when this veto was last used.

Yes babes, we are badly outnumbered in Europe as the EU stands.

The European Commission edicts come to us daily and dictate how we should do things that have already been agreed upon in our own government.

The Common Agriculture Policy and the Common Fisheries Policy are more or less ruling our ability to be able to feed ourselves.
