    Talking about the telly.....

Post by Angie baby on Sat 21 Aug 2010, 12:04 pm

Thank God that the final series of Big Brother is almost over. I hope that they never try to resurrect it again as it had to be the most mind-numbing bit of cheap-telly trash that has ever been put on.

Another thing that is growing out of all proportion is the many spin-offs to the Antiques Roadshow. We now see around six or seven programmes that are loosely based around the finding, assessing and flogging of antiques. Even the so-called celebrities are getting in on the act as they do in many other cheap and nasty TV shows. I guess that is what they do now when they don't have any daywork to do.

The TV producers must think that we really are a bunch of mugs, don't you think ?

It's really just another fad, we had all the Home decorating ones, then the Gardening ones, the house buying ones, and now the Antiques and collectable ones.

It's like our weather, wait 15 minutes and it will chamge again.

The thing is HG, that the ones that you mention above are still with us too, even if they are now in a more diminished capacity.

I don't think that any of the TV companies - including the BBC - will ever be able to resist making such cheap and nasty TV; after all they have to fill the hundreds of hours of programming every week - with something.

I agree, there's too much rubbish chasing too few viewers.

I have always thought that the BBC waste the licence-payers money simply because they get it easy. If they had to really compete with the commercial stations without getting money from a captive audience we may see the money they raise via advertising spend more wisely.

Yes Angie, for that reason alone the BBC should go commercial.

At least then they will have to TRY to compete for the available advertising revenues.

I agree, the quality of Auntie Beeb' programmes had taken a nose-dive in recent years, yet the TV Tax goes up and up.

Time for the Beeb to live in the real world.

The thing is HG.....Where have you EVER seen any bunch give up anything that they get for no effort. The TV licence TAX - as that is truly what it is - will never be let go now that they have it as a separate source of income. ( The government I mean ).

Oh yes, trying to claw back anything from anyone who has had it for years is going to be like pulling teeth!

    Where are the pliers?

Did you know that the Tax collector for the TV licence isn't a government department but a private company?

Since when did a private company have the right to demand money with menaces from almost the whole population?

The company is caled Capita, it is not a government department, and is purely a means to get you to pay a TV licence (often by means of threats).

Have a look at the following forum.

Yes, you are dead right - as usual HG !

In fact "Capita" under a large number of guises does a lot of the government work that used to be done by the civil service.

In fact, because of the policy to privatise as many civil service tasks as possible the government offices are almost all now in the hands of private and profit-making companies.

Even my own Civil Service pension is organised and paid by them

This is called Capita Hartshead and it is located in Darlington, Co' Durham.

    HERE is their web-address !

Just look at the list of jobs that they do down in the right hand side of the home-page.

    Quite shocking really !

Thanks for reminding me about that one HG.
