    Life after being PM.

Post by zathrus on Thu 19 Aug 2010, 12:05 pm

We all know that Tony Blair has made big bucks on the international lecture circuit and unsurprisingly now we hear that Gordon Brown is doing the same.

At least Blair gave up his job as a member of parliament before going onto the lecture circuit. He still acts as a UN envoy to the middle east and gets stipends from a number of other organisations and companies. He makes much more money now than he used to as the British Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown is still a member of parliament for a Scottish constituency but he seems able to find enough time to give 67,000 per hour lectures around the world.

I would think that any MP or member of the House of Lords should be forced to concentrate on that job rather than swanning off to give lucrative lectures to people who have more money than sense.

Most of us that are employed for a living would get the sack if we were caught moonlighting to other employers and I cannot understand why this rule does not apply to members of parliament, can you ?

Well, neither of them have finished up with peerages yet and I am sure that they are making hay while the sun shines I guess.

Most politicians seem to land happily on their feet after their time as our representatives is over. They either finish up with a peerage, go onto the lecture circuit or fill the posts that they had been promised by the commercial sectors during their time in parliament.

It is all far too incestuous for me.

I think that Gordon Brown will soon find out that his constituents will not be happy....

He can't be giving his full attention to being an MP if he's off giving Lecture tours, can he?

    Cheers. HG

No HG, you are dead right that nobody can do justice to their position as a member of parliament if they spend inordinate amounts of time swanning off around the world - for whatever reason.

The thing is that MPs are notorious for having anything up to half a dozen non-executive directorships of private companies while they are supposed to be acting independently for us.

The powers-that-be should stop that too !
