Private schools set to get the most A* grades.

Post by Angie baby on Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:49 am

I wonder why this will be the case ?

Are the private schools just better schools ?

Are the private schools just more able to employ the best teachers ?

Can the private schools get the best equipment ?

Do the private schools get the best raw-materials to work with ? ( smart pupils ).

Are the state schools being starved of funding ?

Do the state schools have to take pupils from both good and bad areas ?

Does wealth - or the lack of it - generate good and bad pupils ?

Being a teacher I find these questions always arise in my mind when I see that the private education sector consistently outperforms the state sector.

    See this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2010/aug/15/a-level-results-private-schools

Well, what do you think about these points and what should we do to change the situation ?

As the private schools sector gets funding both from Government and also the fees paid by Pupil's families, it's not unreasonable to expect them to be better equipped and also able to attract better teachers.

Many State schools in the South lose out with regards to moneys from central Government in order to raise the levels in the Midlands and North of England. My son went for a while to the Manchester area, and the state school he attended there had far better facilities (Indoor Swimming Pool, state of the art Computer Suite, etc.,) none of which were available in our home town in Hampshire.

    Cheers, HG

Yes HG, as far as quality of state schools is concerned, like everything else the state does, this can often be a post-code lottery.

HG, while I am sure that Angie already knows that many private schools are state-aided, ( subsidised ), it is right to bring that point to the readers of R.O.B.

There has been a bit of a stushie going on for many years because many so-called "private" schools are able to show charitable status and get all of the perks that charities get.

That, to me, is just wrong !

All of the above I would suggest.

To me it is no surprise that the private schools produce better results than the state schools do as they have the best of both worlds: They draw their pupils from the best areas and they also get state subsidisation on top of their private incomes and tax-break status. They also have much smaller class sizes than the state schools do.

Oh an BTW...they get that charitable status because they are able to give a few poor students paid-for places at their establishments.

It has been a bone of contention for many years that the likes of Oxford and Cambridge only pay lip service to this cause. Because of this there has been mutterings in the parliament that such posh universities should LOSE their charitable status.

HERE is an online feature that discusses how universities are looking at dropping their charitable status so that they can become fully corporate and so that this will make them more able to list on the stock exchange and get loans in the normal way that all corporations get loans.

Please read this link carefully as it will describe just how many univesities and colleges are looking for full business status.

If this DOES happen I would hope that the payment of taxpayers money to such entities in subsidies would then stop as they cannot have their cake and eat it too.

    That's a shocker Zath !.

I say let them go completely private and let them sell shares in the stock market so long as I do not have to subsidise them in doing what they do for the privileged kids of Britain.

The schools that need the best support and close supervision are the sink-hole schools where the head teachers and their 2nd grade staff have to struggle along day after day with a pittance of money from the treasury.

Sometimes, as I am a teacher, I get very angry about this situation.

Thanks all for your responses to my threadstart.

Thanks for your experience there Angie.

There is no doubt that the schools which are set in deprived areas are bound to be schools which attract the worst of teachers and the worst of students.

These two points alone MUST make this type of school fall by the wayside in the league tables.

Yes my dear, I do agree that this is where the money SHOULD be spent.
