The Queen's speech...What does it mean to you ?

Post by papa_umau on Tue 25 May 2010, 11:56 am

Today we will see and hear the Queen's speech on the news and it will say what the incoming government plan to do in the year to come.

See this ongoing blog covering it HERE.

What do YOU feel about the queen's speech and what it stands for ?

Not being a royalist I find the whole thing rather artificial and maybe even distasteful as I know that what is contained in her speech is not comimg from her mind or even her desires. In fact all that she is doing when she reads this "speech" is being a mouthpiece for the government - of WHATEVER ilk.

As the Queen in Britain is now simply what is called a TITULAR monarch who has no real say in government, all she seems to be good for is the pomp and circumstance and the ostentatious show rather than being allowed to have ANY input whatsoever into what she might say today.

Being a Federalist, I personally think that the monarchy has had it's day and the disbandment of the royal family and their hanger's-on could be another great way for the government to save a lot of taxpayers money !

    Don't you agree ?

It means nothing to me but it may mean something to the world at large. After all very few countries have a royal family like ours.

Looking at that crown on her, head the wife was saying that the cash that that would bring would make a real hole in the government deficit.

    Ha ha...yeah ! lol!

I would like to think that so long as they are not allowed to parasite off the British taxpayers burden they can do their "thing" as much as they like.

This burden is known as "The Civil List"

Read about it and watch a graphic about it HERE

( You will need Macromedia FLASH resident on your machine to see this ) !

"What does it mean to me eh" ?

Well, I think that it is pretty to watch even if it has no standing in law or influence as far as the Queen is concerned.

She is now just a figurehead who has no actual power. Even her "Royal Assent" powers are purely figurative in this modern world.

Read about Royal Assent here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Assent
