Having recently joined here I was looking for a thread regarding tips tweaks or problems with the website and couldn't find one. Sooo.....

So far I'm impressed and have been happily reading through the threads, however I have a problem that although it may be local to me, may in fact be general ie Firefox, my browser of preference, finds the site very hard going and struggles. mouse action and general response is agonisingly slow. Internet explorer 6 is ok though. I have no problems with Firefox ...

It seems, from a report in the Guardian today that almost all of the best places in our top universities are already gone and that is just a week or so after the highers and "A" grades have been awarded to the brightest of our pupils.

If this story is true then there has to be something wrong with our university clearing system as if all the places are already gone there is going to be a lot of bright sixth formers that are going to lose out on university places and a chance of ...

Boy but I wished I hadn't !

The RIAS quotation website has to be the least user-friendly website that I have EVER seen as after filling in pages full of unnecessary information - some of which which I had to rake for - I came across a page that stopped me in my tracks.

Professor Terence Stephenson, head of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has said that as we have already banned smoking in front of collegues at work he sees no reason why we cannot do this for children too as second hand smoke has been found to be strongly connected to children's ...

It seems that after this shooting had taken place it was found that the "gun" was in fact a piece of wood. ( No gun has been found after a massive search !).

If this is the case then I find it astounding that armed police are unable to satisfy themselves that a person is actually brandishing a real gun before they get trigger-happy.

Japan also has very tight gun-ownership laws and we very seldom see any gun crime there either but in countries like ...

It suggested that some women that are moving up in their fertile years are resorting to picking up guys just so that they can steal their sperm and have babies without any complications.

I mean, do any of you think that women might stoop to doing this just so that they can get themselves impregnated in the easiest way possible ?

Midwives or mechanics ?

I was stunned to read that a group of midwives have been forced to learn the basics of car maintenance and fill in a three page log-sheet/check-list on their cars before they do anything every morning.

Not only does this mean that such midwives will not only be wasting precious time doing this but they will be going to home-births wearing the same clothes that they wore while doing their vehicle check. Seems silly to me in these days of transferrable infections.

Sometimes I think that ...

I watched the 'grilling' of the Masters of the Universe (bankers) yesterday with incresing dismay. Not only should they be up for the chop, but so should the wasters in this government. The real killer for me was when they were asked if they had any banking qualifications and not ONE of them had !!!. That means that my work as a social scientist could also allow me to dabble in running a major bank (just need a degree perhaps, but no banking experience !!). How sick is that !!. If I was not qualifed ...

The latest prison build under the PFI scheme in Scotland and run privately instead of by the SPS - called Addiewell Prison, ( nicknamed The Addiewell Hilton by the cons ), has blown up due to a lack of control by the privatised and poorly-trained staff.

This jail was described as THE most luxurious prison ever built which had TV and internet connections in every cell and which had THE most modern and luxurious recreation and sports halls in any prison in Britain.

Of course everyone ...

And I say "hell mend em" !

Manorlane is a company that has made many millions of pounds out of the last building bubble where it built whole gated communities of half-million and million pound homes for the rich.

It's latest venture - which was originally intended to be a whole new town of 170 executive-level houses at around and above half a million pounds each - has had to be ground to a halt after the first show-home was left only half completed.

Now that the bubble ...

In Germany, people who have cars more than nine years old are offered a bribe to scrap their old car and buy a new one.

As the global downturn has hit new-car sales badly right across Europe this idea is being considered for Britain.

If this scheme was to be initiated here it would mean that around £2,180 would be paid to encourage the old cars to be scrapped and new cars to be bought.

Do any of you think that this might be a good idea and if you were offered that amount to scrap ...

Because of the chronic shortages in social-housing stocks many tenants are being encouraged via a £30,000 bribe to go to the private sector to buy or rent so that this council stock will be released for the needs of the millions of people that are homeless or are waiting for social housing.

The trouble is that these "bribes" are coming from the taxpayers so that a quick-fix can be found for the terrible state that is prevalent in the council social-housing situation.

In his first few weeks of power President Obama has done two things that have been needed doing for some time.

1). He has started the procedures to shut down Guantanamo Bay camp.

2). He has placed a top-end cap on the chief executives salaries of $100,000 for all of the bosses that are running state-owned and controlled banks. ( I would love to see Brown doing the exact same here ).

Before anyone says it....Motco....I know they shout that the best top executives have to be paid ...
