Site anomolies

Post by wrinkles on Thu Aug 27, 2009 2:24 pm

Having recently joined here I was looking for a thread regarding tips tweaks or problems with the website and couldn't find one. Sooo.....
So far I'm impressed and have been happily reading through the threads, however I have a problem that although it may be local to me, may in fact be general ie Firefox, my browser of preference, finds the site very hard going and struggles. mouse action and general response is agonisingly slow. Internet explorer 6 is ok though. I have no problems with Firefox elsewhere only on here.

I raise the point because Internet explorer is incredibly unsafe as browsers go and Firefox much more secure. It is my preferred browser and I suspect preferred by many otheres not to mention the Linux community.
I don't know if there are any tweaks you can apply to improve perfomance for Firefox but at least you are forewarned.. Rolling Eyes

Hi there "Wrinkles"....Welcome to the site !

Yes, you are quite right that this site - and many more - ( which is a known problem with Firefox ), do have some problems with normal navigation. ( I agree that Firefox is more secure than any of the IE versions, but that is probably because the hackers find the IE browsers more worth-while to attack as there are many more of them in use out there in cyberspace ).

I used to use Firefox myself and while I found it to be an excellent bit of open-source kit, because I suffered your exact problems when surfing WIN-optimised sites I decided that it was too much trouble to continue using it.

This site works best with IE7 and above, ( I now use version IE8 ) and as you have already said that you can use IE6 then maybe you might be best just doing that.

Have fun !

Belated thanks on the heads up. I only use IE6 because usually when I come on here it is via my work computer. Which whilst adequate is not exactly state of the art in fact I believe the user manual is written in Latin. The operating system is Win2000 which though, in computer terms is ancient it is, in my opinion the most reliable and stable OS so far produced by Microsoft. As far as I am concerned it does what is required of it and does it well therefore I see no reason to change it and be suckered into the Big Microsoft con and rip off. XP was a disaster when first launched, although successive service packs have improved it out of all proportion, Vista least said the better and now we are fast approaching windows 7 and all the joy that will bring.
In fairness I did use a prelaunch Beta version of Win7 for a couple of months and it did appear to be OK but since then I expect they have added lots of bells and whistles which will no doubt spoil any good points it had

Yes, it annoys me to no end that Microsoft keep moving the goalposts so that we are forced to keep buying the latest O.S. if we want to keep getting the tech support that is out there.

I used to use WIN 95 but it got so old that it started to have problems running most of the websites. I upgraded to WIN 98 and kept it in use for a few years and until the same situation developed with it too. In fact I kept it working so long that when I went to upgrade to XP the oh-so helpful sales assistant in PC World told me that "they no longer support XP" and that "Microsoft refuse to supply them with this operating system any more". I WAS LIVID !

It was shortly after that that I discovered the small independent company called Computer Division - who I have reviewed here a couple of times - and they installed WIN XP for me with no problem. They even gave me the disk to go with it.

After my recent trials and tribulations with a really nasty trojan this company had to do a clean install of WIN XP once again and now it is running lightening fast and a treat to work with. They also re-installed my IE8 browser and populated all of my files on it.

Just an update, for anyone that may be interested, regarding my original post here. I have recently updated Firefox to version 3.5.4 and it seems to have ironed out the problems I was having. There is virtually no performance difference between Firefox and IE, The site works as it should an I can again consign IE to the dark cupboard where it belongs. Incidentally, although not having tried it myself, I am led to believe that Google Chrome also works well on this site. Chrome is another viable alternative to Internet explorer.
